World Press Photo Awarded Images

World Press Photo in Amsterdam, Netherlands, this week named their photos of the year for 2009. Sixty-three photographers from 23 nationalities won prizes in 10 categories in the annual awards. The 5,847 photographers who took part entered 101,960 photos.

First prize in the Spot News Stories category of the 2010 World Press Photo contest by Argentine photographer Walter Astrada for Agence France Presse, named bloodbath in Madagascar.

Italian photographer Pietro Masturzo’s picture showing women shouting on a rooftop in protest at the presidential election results in Tehran, Iran was named World Press Photo of the Year 2009 in the World Press Photo contest.

First prize in the Arts and Entertainment Stories category by Canadian photographer Kitra Cahana, named Fabrica for Colours Rainbowland, New Mexico.

First prize winner in the Spot News Singles category by Australian photographer Adam Ferguson, VII Mentor Programme for The New York Times, showing an Afghan woman rushed from the scene of a suicide bombing in Kabul on December 15, 2009.

First prize in the General News Singles category of the 2010 World Press Photo contest by Swedish photographer Kent Klich, named Gaza photo album: Tuzzah, Gaza Strip.

First prize in the General News Stories category of the 2010 World Press Photo contest by Italian photographer Marco Vernaschi for Pulitzer Centre, named Guinea Bissau.

Second prize in the People in the News Singles category of the 2010 World Press Photo contest by American photographer David Guttenfelder for The Associated Press, showing US soldiers respond to Taliban fire outside their bunker in Korengal Valley, Afghanistan, May 11, 2009.

First prize in the People in the News Stories category of the 2010 World Press Photo contest by British photographer Charles Ommanney, Getty Images for Newsweek, named Inauguration Day, Washington DC.

First prize in the Sports Action Singles category went to British photographer Gareth Copley of Press Association, for his photo showing England’s Jonathan Trott at the fifth Ashes test match in London in August 2009.

Second prize in the Contemporary Issues Singles category went to Italian photographer Stefano De Luigi, VII Network for Le Monde Magazine, showing a giraffe killed by drought in northeast Kenya in September 2009.

First prize in the Sports Features Stories category of the 2010 World Press Photo contest by American photographer Elizabeth Kreutz, named Lance Armstrong’s Comeback.

First prize in the Sports Action Stories category by American photographer Donald Miralle, Jr., showing Ironman World Championships in Hawaii.

First prize in the Sports Features Singles category by American photographer Robert Gauthier, Los Angeles Times Magazine, showing Yankee fans try to distract Angels left fielder Juan Rivera at Yankee Stadium.

Second prize in the Daily Life Singles category by French photographer Joan Bardeletti, named Sunday picnic, Mozambique.

First prize in the Contemporary Issues Stories category of the 2010 World Press Photo contest by American photographer Eugene Richards, Reportage by Getty Images for The Sunday Times Magazine/Paris Match, named War Is Personal, USA.

First prize in the Daily Life Stories category by Peruvian photographer Gihan Tubbeh, showing Adrian, a 13-year old autistic boy.

First prize in the Portraits Singles category by British photographer Laura Pannack, Lisa Pritchard Agency for The Guardian Weekend magazine, showing Graham, an anorexic teenager.

The first prize in the Arts and Entertainment Singles category by photographer Malick Sidibe from Mali for The New York Times Magazine, named Fashion portfolio: Prints and the Revolution, Mali.

Canadian photographer Paul Nicklen of National Geographic took the first prize in the Nature Stories category.

The first prize in the Nature Singles category went to Hungarian photographer Joe Petersburger of National Geographic, for his picture named Hunting kingfisher, Hungary.
